Learning About Medicare

Do you qualify for Medicare?

Have you been receiving (SSDI) Social Security Disability Insurance? Individuals who are under 65 years old and disabled must receive SSDI for 24 months before they're eligible to apply for Medicare.

Are you turning 65 soon, or already 65 and want to switch to Medicare? The initial enrollment period for those turning 65 is three months before and after the month you turn 65. There is a (SEP) special enrollment period for those with employer coverage who are 65+ but want to switch to Medicare. The SEP lasts up to eight months after your group health plan ends. For those who miss the initial enrollment period and don't qualify for the SEP, there is a (GEP) general enrollment period between January 1st and March 31st each year. If you enroll during the GEP, there is a possibility you'll have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

Do you have (ESRD) End-Stage Renal Disease or (ALS) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis? If you have permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant, you are eligible for Medicare regardless of age. If you are diagnosed with ALS, you automatically qualify for Medicare the month your disability benefits begin.
